About silk + steel
 

Silk + Steel is a small-batch, artisan-produced women’s clothing company based in Bloomington, Indiana. We (Pam Walters and Jean Robinson), long-time friends and retired Indiana University faculty members, launched Silk + Steel in spring 2019 to share with friends and customers the kind of simple, minimalist fashion in beautiful, natural and sustainable fabrics we have long favored when sewing (or purchasing) clothing for ourselves. We offer a carefully curated selection of styles that look good on a variety of body shapes and sizes in an inclusive sizing range: our top and dress sizes 1-5 approximate commercial sizes 2-20. (We offer some garments in sizes OS-, OS, and OS+ that span the same size range.)

Our vision is part of the “slow fashion” and “sustainable fashion” movement.  We don’t want to add to the throw-away disposable purchasing so common now. Instead, we offer to you durable and environmentally-friendly fabrics and elegant design that transcend the trends of the moment. Our timeless styles, gorgeous fabrics, and impeccable construction result in Silk + Steel garments for you to enjoy for years to come!

All Silk + Steel garments are handcrafted by Pam in her sewing studio in Bloomington. You can purchase an already-constructed garment, or she can craft a made-to-order garment for you in the size, fabric, and color of your choosing, perhaps with some modest personal fitting adjustments (say, shorter sleeves or adding a bit of overall length). The choice is yours! If you choose a made-to-order garment (that we do not have in inventory), you can expect to receive your garment 2-4 weeks after you place the order, depending on whether we have your fabric of choice in inventory.
